We
started operations at the Tecon Rio Grande in 1997. Tecon Rio Grande
is located in Rio Grande Port, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul,
and with a depth of 12 meters, can receive many of the largest vessels
operating off the Brazilian coast.
Tecon Rio Grande is the southern-most Brazilian port for vessels from Europe and
the USA and the first port for vessels going to these regions. As a result, the draft
necessary to serve a specific vessel in the Rio Grande Port, can be less than the
draft of the Santos Port or other Brazilian ports, the same vessel, since the vessel
will be loaded with less cargo when it is docked at Tecon Rio Grande.
Therefore,
the draft of the dock in Tecon Rio Grande will never restrict the capacity of the
vessels navigating the Brazilian coast.
Tecon Rio Grande is located before the ports of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, which
are responsible, collectively, for approximately 1.8 million TEUs in 2005, according
to CEPAL. Considering the limitation of the draft in these ports (10 meters and 10.5
meters, respectively) and the change in the profile of the container fleets worldwide,
as well as the continuing increase in the size of vessels — in 2006, the largest
vessel for transportation of containers in the world was launched, with capacity
for 11,000 TEU —397 meters in length, 56 meters in width and 16 meters of draft — ,
the Rio Grande Port provides all the necessary conditions to be a port of regional
for cargo containers heading Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
In 2007, Tecon Rio Grande handled 622,406 TEUs.
