We
have renewable, 25-year term concessions to operate two of the main
container port terminals in Brazil: Tecon Rio Grande, in the Port
of Rio Grande, and Tecon Salvador, in the Port of Salvador, Bahia.
For further information, please see “Business— Material
Agreements —Lease Agreements.”
Our operations in the Port Terminals segment are categorized as follows:
- Port Loading and Unloading Operation. We have 24-hour/day
operations, ranging from the receiving of containers (empty or
full) to be embarked before the docking of ships, the loading
and unloading of containers on the ships to the delivery of the
unloaded containers after the ships have left;
- Storage and ancillary services. Customs area for
storage of imports and exports, as well as rendering of ancillary
services, such as placing and removing containers, supplying
electricity, monitoring containers and positioning them for inspection,
among other related services. We also offer the container depot
service for storage of empty containers and container repair
and cleaning services.
Subsequent to the start-up of our operations, production
grew significantly at the Tecon Rio Grande and Tecon Salvador, as
measured by the number of containers loaded and unloaded from the
vessels per hour.
During our management, we reached an average production of up to
46.1 containers per hour in Tecon Rio Grande and 36.6 containers
per hour in Tecon Salvador, whereas historical production in Brazil,
before port privatization, amounted to only about ten containers
per hour.
This increase in efficiency and the subsequent reduced waiting time
for anchorage and the total operation time more broadly (total hours
as of the anchorage and unberthing of vessels), is key for expanding
our customer base in this industry segment, since this efficiency
materially affects the operating costs of ship owners.
In 2006, 2005 and 2004, we transported 884,000, 905,000 and 851,000
TEU, respectively (535,000, 548,000 and 521,000 containers), and
we were consolidated as one of the largest containers operators in
Brazil. In 2006 our net revenues in this segment was US$127.5 million.
From 1997 to 2006, our throughput compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
was 13.9%. our container port terminals satisfy international safety
standards and have been certified by the International Ship and Port
Facility Security Code (“ISPS”), a requirement of the
Navy International Organization. As such, we can serve vessels from
all certified ports in the world. Furthermore, we operate in various
public ports, such as in Fortaleza, Ceará (container, general
and bulk cargo), and in the port of Santos, São Paulo (vehicles). |
