Since 1997, Wilson Sons has contributed to the creation of a new panorama for this segment, operating the Tecon Rio Grande unit, the rst publicly bid privatisation of a container terminal in the country. Situated 320 km (200 miles) from the city of Porto Alegre, the Capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Tecon Rio Grande has 900 metres of berth, with a draught of 42 feet (15m), operating with the main shipping lines that connect Brazil to the world. The equipment is of the highest technology available, including the presence of nine Post-Panamax STS (ship-to-shore) cranes and 22 Rubber-Tyre Gantry (RTG) cranes, not to mention 2,800 sockets for refrigerated containers. The terminal operates using road, waterway and rail transport connections.
Some 17 years ago, Wilson Sons won the concession for the operation of Tecon Salvador, situated in the heart of the city of Salvador, in the state of Bahia. This terminal o ers services such as container movement, storage of empty containers, container packing and unpacking, as well as project cargo such as those with special sizes or weights. Since the start, the Company has made constant investment in the acquisition of new equipment, infrastructure, information systems and training.
Due to the investments completed, the terminal is able to receive some of the world’s largest container ships. Nowadays the area of the terminal totals 118,000 m. The terminal has two ship berths; the Cais de Ligação with a length of 240m preferentially servicing cabotage and project cargo; and the principal berth, Água de Meninos with a draught of 15m and 377m in length. The terminal also has three portainer cranes of the Super Post Panamax type, and another three Panamax portainers, as well as eleven RTGs, of which nine are fully electric.
Founded in 1999, Brasco is one of the largest private port terminals devoted to upstream support of the oil and gas industry in Brazil. Its two units, in Niterói and Rio de Janeiro, are strategically placed within Guanabara Bay, and have the capacity to support activities in the Campos and Santos petroleum basins. In addition, Brasco has the experience and has qualified personnel for the establishment of bases along the whole of the Brazilian and South American coastline, having already operated in São Luís (Maranhão), Belém (Pará), Salvador (Bahia), Fortaleza (Ceará) and Vitória (Espírito Santo).
Wilson Sons Tugboats is the market leader in the segment of harbour manoeuvres, and is active in port and ocean towage services. Apart from traditional services, the Company also offers special services such as support for the construction and maintenance of platforms & FPSOs and support for salvage operations involving re ghting. The Company has an Operations Centre (Central de Operação de Rebocadores - COR), which tracks the vessels from a central location and generates usage indicators, thereby assisting operational efficiency strategy and also reducing the risks of accidents.
The employees at Wilson Sons Tugboats are trained at the Maritime Training Centre, in the coastal city of Guarujá (State of São Paulo). One of the main distinguishing factors of this Centre is the presence of a simulator.
Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore has one of the largest and most modern fleets of Brazilian flag offshore support vessels. The WSUT vessels operate as maritime support to platforms for the exploration and production of oil and gas.
The main activity of the vessels is that of supporting the logistics of supply of equipment and other products such as: drilling mud, tubes, cement and food, among other materials necessary for the operation of platforms that have been installed along the Brazilian coast. WSUT has an additional ve vessels currently under construction, with delivery planned by the end of 2016.
