For us, environmental issues are managed strategically, as they are seen as key elements in the sustainable development of our business and fundamental among our corporate values.
Maintain an environmental management system in all our activities in order to ensure compliance with the laws, mitigate environmental impacts and foster continuous improvement. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint, driving innovation and finding solutions that contribute to the climate agenda and generate new opportunities
We seek to adopt the best practices in the maritime and port logistics sector, focusing our efforts on fundamental pillars related to environmental issues: waste management, water resources, biodiversity and climate change.
Water, waste and biodiversity
Wilson Sons foster efficient water management in its operations, adapting to the specific needs of each business, and carries out the appropriate treatment of effluents, in full compliance with current laws before disposal. As for waste management, our focus is to reduce the generation of these materials, increase reuse and recycling, and ensure environmentally appropriate final disposal.
Operating along the Brazilian coast and in inland navigation, we are particularly concerned about the potential impacts of our activities on biodiversity, especially on Brazil's marine and coastal fauna. We are committed to ensuring that all our operations fully comply with the requirements of the respective environmental licenses.
Check out some examples of actions that we promote together with the company's businesses:
- Systems for reusing effluents generated after washing equipment.
- Zero Landfill Project, in which measures are adopted to reduce the disposal of waste in landfills, giving better uses to waste and rejects from operations.
- On-site audits of critical suppliers related to solid waste management.
- Artificial Shipwrecks Park Project, in which we donate decommissioned tugboats to become artificial reefs, stimulating the development of marine biodiversity in Pernambuco. The Company donates decommissioned tugboats, which are sunk in locations licensed by the environmental agency with the aim of creating artificial reefs.
Climate change has the potential to deeply impact the entire global maritime logistics chain, becoming a central theme in Wilson Sons' development strategy. The company has improved its management in this area, aligning itself with the highest international standards to identify, measure and develop action plans in response to climate risks and opportunities associated with its operations.
We are engaged in actions to adapt to and mitigate climate change. Learn about the initiatives in this strategic line:
- Adherence to the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) for climate reporting;
- Voluntary monitoring and reporting of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, which was recognized for the 3rd consecutive year with the Gold Seal in the GHG Protocol Program;
- Adherence to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), with above-average performance in the segment;
- Installation of the first electric wheeled cranes in Brazil, at Tecon Salvador and Tecon Rio Grande;
- Implementation of the first electric yard tractors in terminals in the country.
We ensure energy efficiency through actions to reduce energy consumption and projects to reuse water resources. Some initiatives in this strategic line:
- More efficient use of marine fuel, overseen by the Tug Operations Center (COR);
- Retrofit of lighting systems, reducing electricity consumption at Tecon Rio Grande and Shipyards;
- New tugboats with up to 14% reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and a 70% reduction in nitrogen oxides.
Commitment to continuous monitoring of climate-relevant metrics facilitates effective management of risks and opportunities related to the sustainability agenda. Since 2013, we have proactively published our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory in the public registry of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program.
We have an Integrity Program supported by codes of ethical conduct for employees and suppliers and by the anti-corruption guide, which guide our commitments to integrity in our relationships. We are on a continuous journey in search of the best environmental, social and governance practices, acting with the commitment to apply them with transparency in the conduct of our business.
